Tree La Rooy serves as the Collection Librarian (Development) in the University of Otago Library's Digital and Collections division, specifically within the Collection Strategy and Development team. Tree La Rooy also holds the role of Tertiary Education Union (TEU) Union Representative for the Healthy Campus staff support team, where he addresses general workplace issues for university staff.
Tree La Rooy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Otago. His professional career at the university library is evidenced in multiple university calendars and library annual reports dating back to 2001, with previous positions including Curriculum Services Librarian (noted around 2011) and team leader roles. He actively contributes to the library's digital resources by creating and updating LibGuides, including the guide for Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences, last updated September 8, 2025. As former TEU Otago Branch President, Tree La Rooy has publicly advocated for the central importance of humanities departments to the University of Otago's reputation. He participated in the celebration of 50 Years of Politics at Otago in 2017 representing the union, engaged in panel discussions on democracy, and co-presented workshops on union activism and feminist politics with TEU organiser Kris Smith. Tree La Rooy has been featured in TEU annual reports for 2020 and 2022, highlighting University of Otago branch efforts, and was involved in staff events such as CALT Korero in April 2024.
